The latest spat ignited Friday, after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan confirmed earlier reports that Turkey has started testing the Russian-made system, brushing aside USA concerns.

Macron's proposal to protect his country's secular values from the followers of "extremist" Islamic currents angered the Turkish government, adding this to the list of many disputes between the French President and Erdogan.

"What else can be said to a head of state who does not understand freedom of belief and who behaves in this way to millions of people living in his country who are members of a different faith?"

French lawmakers will be presented with a bill in December that targets radical Islam and strengthens secularism in France.

The proposed bill is likely to upset Turkey, especially calls to control mosque funding and the ban on training imams overseas.

The Turkish president said on October 6 after Macron's initial comments on "Islamist separatism", that the remarks were "a clear provocation" and showed the French leader's "impertinence".

Two weeks ago he called Macron's statements on Islamist separatism and the need to "structure Islam" in France a provocation.

"You are constantly picking on Erdogan".

The Elysee official, who asked not to be named, also said that France had noted "the absence of messages of condolence and support" from the Turkish president after the beheading of teacher Samuel Paty outside Paris.

"There will be elections (in France)". I don't think he has a long way to go. Why?

Macron this month demanded that Turkey explain what he said was the arrival of jihadist fighters in Azerbaijan and said: "A red line has been crossed".

Erdogan on Saturday accused France - which along with Russian Federation and the United States co-chairs the Minsk Group tasked with resolving the conflict - of "being behind the disasters and the occupations in Azerbaijan". What have you done so far? "You can not because you are not honest".

"Now, our Azerbaijani brothers are marching towards the occupied territories".
