  • One killed in clashes as Guinea awaits result of presidential election

His main rival, opposition politician Cellou Dalein Diallo - who claimed victory before the publication of the results - received 33.5 percent of the vote, according to the electoral authority.

"We are. continuing to closely monitor developments on the ground".

Conde's attempt to secure a third term in office has been the subject of contentious debate in the country, as opponents argue it is in violation of the law, which imposes a two term limit on the President. "We have the evidence of the fraud and we will challenge all of this in the Constitutional Court", said Diallo spokesman Aliou Condé, without providing any evidence.

Celebrations by his supporters were suppressed when security forces fired tear gas to disperse them.

Diallo was formerly a prime minister under authoritarian leader Lansana Conte.

Friday's violence follows a series of clashes on Thursday in which four were killed, security minister Damantang Albert Camara told Reuters.

He said Diallo's home was being guarded for "security reasons", without elaborating.
