The Hamilton County Health Department, in partnership with the Maclellan and Benwood Foundations, will offer free flu vaccine to the county's most vulnerable at various drive-thru clinics this fall.

For weeks, politicians and health officials have been clear: get a flu shot this year.

All Toronto residents who wish to get the flu vaccine will also be able to get vaccinated at doctors' offices or participating pharmacies.

"Recovering from the flu usually takes a week to 10 days, but for some people it can worsen pre-existing health conditions such as asthma or heart disease or develop into more serious health problems such as pneumonia and, in rare circumstances, can be fatal", the release says.

The health unit, which covers Oxford and Elgin counties says the move is created to avoid what they call a "twindemic" that could see the health care system overwhelmed by a combination of flu patients and COVID-19 patients.

Vaccinations are provided through a drive-thru at Pinellas County Health Department, 205 Dr. MLK Jr. There were two flu shot clinics in Santa Barbara, two in Lompoc and two in Santa Maria, along with smaller events aimed at protecting the county's elderly population.

San Luis Obispo County is also offering free flu shots.

- October 21 1 p.m.to 5 p.m. Valley High School 2839 Burnham Ave. The clinics are on Saturday mornings, from 9 a.m.to noon, and people can walk in to get a shot without an appointment. The flu vaccine is recommended for all persons age six months or older who do not have contraindications.
