  • Afghan men look for their relatives at a hospital after a suicide bombing in Kabul Afghanistan

Afghan security forces have killed Abu Muhsin al-Masri, a senior al-Qaida leader who was on the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Most Wanted Terrorists list, Afghanistan's National Directorate of Security (NDS) said in a tweet late Saturday.

The explosion struck outside an education centre in a heavily Shia neighbourhood of western Kabul, Dasht-e-Barchi.

Interior Ministry spokesman Tariq Arian says that the attacker was trying to enter the centre when he was stopped by security guards.

Hospitals are still being searched for victims of the blast, so the number of casualties could still rise.

Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the attack on social media, but did not provide any evidence to support this.

An affiliate with the group Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) claimed responsibility for a similar suicide attack at an education centre in August 2018, in which 34 students were killed.

Victoria and Melbourne's re-opening announcement delayed amid coronavirus cluster
Victoria recorded seven new coronavirus cases today , including six linked to an outbreak in Melbourne's northern suburbs. A reporter accused the premier of "dangling a carrot for Victorians" and today "hitting them with a stick".

The attack, which was condemned by North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and the Afghan government, took place in an area of west Kabul that is home to many from the country's Shia community, a religious minority in Afghanistan targeted in the past by groups such as Islamic State.

"How much more can we endure, as individuals and as society?"

The U.S. signed a peace deal with the Taliban in February, opening up a path toward withdrawing American troops from the conflict. USA officials said the agreement would also help refocus security efforts on fighting the Islamic State, which is a rival of the Taliban in Afghanistan.

Afghanistan has seen an upsurge in violence in recent weeks, even as the Taliban and the Afghan government hold peace talks to end the bloody war in the country.

A Taliban spokesman on Twitter denied responsibility for the attack, which comes at a sensitive time as teams representing the insurgents and the government meet in Qatar to seek a peace deal.

The Kabul bombing was not the only violence in Afghanistan on Saturday, as a roadside bomb killed nine people in eastern Afghanistan, near Ghazni city.

A police spokesman added that a second device was triggered and killed two police officers who were making their way to the scene of the devastated bus.
