Country Singer, Oneonta Native Jerry Jeff Walker Dies

Jerry Jeff Walker, the songwriter and performer who long embodied Texas music, died Friday (October 23) of lung cancer.

Born Ronald Clyde Crosby on March 16, 1942 in Oneonta, N.Y., Walker was brought up in a well-known musical family.

Walker's 1968 song "Mr. Bojangles" would go on to become a standard of the American songbook, spawning covers from incredibly diverse artists including Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Sammy Davis Jr., JJ Cale, John Denver, Neil Diamond and many more over the decades. He released over 30 albums, including "It's About Time" in 2018. His first claim to fame came with a small group of his guy friends when they got together in Oneonta High School and formed the group The Tones.

He is survived by his manager-wife, Susan, daughter Jessie Jane and son and fellow musician Django Walker.
