  • McConnell dodges health questions on bruises bandaged hands

That all contributed to intense interest in the bruising on McConnell's hands, and whether it might point to any health problems.

After photos of his bruised hands raised concerns about his health, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told reporters he does not have health issues.

While appearing on Capitol Hill this week, McConnell was seen with the skin on his hand looking much darker than the rest of his body and he has a bandage around his thumb.

Later, McConnell-per CNN-claimed there were "no concerns" when asked directly about the bruises and his general health status. In a brief exchange in a Senate hallway, McConnell at first declined to answer when asked about his health by a Politico reporter, joking instead that he was anxious about the reporter's health. His office declined to comment.

On Friday when McConnell spoke on the Senate floor about Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett, his mouth no longer appeared to have bruises, the Associated Press reported. Senators will then return to their home states to campaign ahead of the election November 3.

During his debate against Senate Democratic challenger Amy McGrath earlier this October, McConnell had no noticeable bruisings on his hands.

McConnell, 78, is well-placed to beat McGrath, if in a tighter race than he would usually expect, for a seventh six-year term. In 2019, McConnell fractured his shoulder after he tripped and fell at his Kentucky home.

McConnell, who survived polio as a child, has been a proponent of mask-wearing and public safety precautions such as social distancing during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

"The only thing each of us can do, until we get a vaccine, is act as responsibly as possible".
