"Sadly, yes - the baby passed away", police confirmed on Tuesday.
A newborn baby who was in critical condition after being brutally abused by a dog has died in hospital.
A neighbour told the publication she had seen the mother sitting on the grass verge next to the road, tenderly holding her baby.
The neighbour had met the baby earlier in the day when the rottweiler escaped from the property and being familiar with the dog she helped put him back in the fence.
She told Stuff she would be forever haunted by what she saw.
The dog set upon the little boy - who is believed to have been just one day old - after being left alone with the child in Hamilton, New Zealand.
Karen said the family dog had grabbed the baby while the mother was using the toilet.
'The whole thing is terrible, every time I close my eyes I just see him, ' she said.
"The whole thing is awful, every time I close my eyes I just see him".
She said it appeared the dog had attempted to bury the baby, as he was covered in dirt.
"She told me which dog did it - they have two".
"The matter will be referred to the coroner", said the spokeswoman.
The dog has been confiscated and is in the Hamilton City Council's animal control facility.
"Staff collected the dog and it is now secured at the council's animal control facility", she said.
In a statement on Monday, Hamilton City Council animal control manager Susan Stanford said her staff had been contacted by the police soon after the incident.
She says it had been a deeply traumatic time, and the council's thoughts were with the family and individuals involved.
