The results have been derived from immunogenicity tests conducted between the months of July and August in a varied group of volunteers, including younger and older adults.

AstraZeneca did not provide details of the data behind the statement or say when it would publish eagerly awaited late-stage phase-three trial data, which would show whether the vaccine works well enough in large-scale trials for it to be approved. Drugmaker Dr. Reddy's Laboratories had also recently got DCGI approval to conduct clinical trials of Russia's Sputnik-V vaccine.

The Astra-Oxford vaccine candidate is one of several front-runners in the race for protection against the virus.

Pharmaceutical companies from both home and overseas have joined the global race to develop vaccines and treatments for COVID-19 virus, with 27 of them having approval for clinical trials.

Polls have said that nearly half of Russians do not plan to receive the Covid-19 vaccine at any point.

"It is encouraging to see immunogenicity responses were similar between older and younger adults and that reactogenicity was lower in older adults, where the Covid-19 disease severity is higher", an AstraZeneca spokesman told Reuters.

He said healthcare workers will likely be prioritised first for any vaccine, as well as people considered at increased risk of complications.

Dr Fauci added: "That could start by the end of this year, the beginning of January, February, March of next year".
