A statement from the broadcaster said: "We regret that the original trailer did not refer to Reeva Steenkamp directly".
Lucy Hadley, Campaign and Policy manager at Women's Aid said: "It was shocking to watch the trailer of the BBC documentary of Oscar Pistorius, and hear no mention of Reeva Steenkamp's name at all".
In the trailer for documentary The Trials of Oscar Pistorius, the former Olympic sprinter is shown as a child, competing at the Paralympics and receiving medals.
"We have removed the trail and it will be replaced by something more representative of the series, which examines in detail a number of complex issues connected to her murder".
"We are aware of the upset it has caused, which was never the intention".
Historian Dr Fern Riddell was one of the first to hit out at the BBC for the glaring omission.
"No-one says Reeva Steenkamp's name in this trailer, or speaks for her. In seven years, with all that's supposedly changed about editorial practice and how we talk about these stories, she's just back to being the unnamed girlfriend".
"This is incredibly irresponsible", said one. This is wrong. The real tragedy is that a woman's life was ended.
Another person said the BBC should be "ashamed" of the trailer, accusing the organisation of portraying Pistorius "as some kind of victim who has suffered an unfortunate downfall". "The man shot dead his partner in the bathroom".

After the trailer was released, domestic abuse campaigner David Challen wrote: "A total failure to even name the woman he killed".
However, when the trailer for the four-part series was released on Tuesday, online commentators were outraged that it failed to mention Steenkamp by name.
The promotional image the BBC shared alongside the trailer also sparked criticism.
