Djokovic beats Krajinovic in Vienna opener

In his first appearance in Vienna since 2007, Djokovic's main competition for the title will come from defending champion Dominic Thiem, who is playing on home soil, and Stefanos Tsitsipas, who recently took Djokovic to five sets in the French Open semi-finals.

Last year, Thiem defeated Diego Schwartzman for his first title at Vienna, and become the first home talent to take the title since Jurgen Melzer in 2010. But Djokovic arrived in Vienna as the favourite not just to reach the final but to win the title.

It was Djokovic's first match since losing the French Open final to Rafael Nadal, and his first indoor tournament since the Davis Cup Finals in Madrid in November 2019.

The US Open champion Dominic Thiem, a beneficiary of Djokovic's disqualification in NY, also progressed on home soil.

A couple of breaks in the second set allowed Djokovic to clinch victory - his 38th in 40 matches this year. Thiem may have drawn a lucky loser in his opener courtesy of Alex de Minaur's late withdrawal, but second in line would be either Wawrinka or No22 Cristian Garin, followed by one of the players of the year in the shape of Rublev.

Evans was in a strong position, leading 6-3 4-5, when the Slovenian called time on the match after suffering a right thigh injury.
