Moss, who was born with Down Syndrome has served as the Oilers locker room attendant for more than 30 years.

25 birthday in isolation from COVID-19 when he was transferred from hospital to a new Winnifred Stewart facility.

Edmonton sports legend Joey Moss died on Monday at the age of 57.

In addition to his contribution to the sporting world, The Joey Moss Literacy Centre For Excellence was launched in 2019. And there he was, belting out the National Anthem louder than anyone at Rexall. Gretzky approached then GM Glen Sather about hiring him.

COVID-19, however, was not a factor in his death.

It is with deep sadness that the family announces the passing of Joey Moss. "Joey's bravery, humor, strength, work ethic and perseverance in our dressing room and in our community left indelible impressions that will live with us all", the team said in a statement.

We love you Joey and all of Edmonton, Canada, and the National Hockey League will remember you fondly.

Joey was a remarkable person who taught us to love, laugh, and enjoy life always. We were all lucky enough to be part of his life for a lot of years. And Edmonton loved him back.

Both men will be dearly missed.

The memory of Joey Moss, everything he did and gave up for this franchise, the laughter he brought and the smiles he helped put on every player, coach, and staff member of the Edmonton Oilers will remain for next season and every season to follow. In 2015, he was also inducted into Alberta's Sports Hall of Fame.

Moss over the years was more recognizable than numerous players, and much more modest than them, too.

Not only did Moss handle typical locker room attendant duties, he also performed O Canada on a number of occasions.

Stafford had the best quote on that aspect of it, too.

One of the defining or most notable moments of Joey Moss likely would have been during the 2006 Cup run.

Seven years ago there was so much love directed to the guy when both organizations went overboard to celebrate his 50th birthday. Wayne Gretzky met him while dating Moss' sister, Vikki. When that worked out, Gretzky called Mandrusiak to see if Joey could work the Eskimos training camp in 1986.

This is an absolutely devastating day for Oil Country.

Joey symbolized everything that fans valued in Edmonton.
