On achieving a milestone, the company is now even more confident and notching up their game by setting up new goals and resolutions for the upcoming years. But it seems like Google has hit the goal a bit early as it claims that their new products - including the Pixel 5 - have been designed with recycled materials.

In August a year ago, Google shared a new set of hardware and sustainability commitments to reduce its impact on the environment.

As Google continues to find ways that they can be responsible for their impact on the environment and the community, they've recently outlined the next steps in their goals for creating sustainable hardware products. Google is all set to use at least fifty percent of recycled plastic in all their hardwares with an aim to use renewed plastics wherever possible. The sustainable fabric cover was introduced with the Nest Mini a year ago.

Google's packing
Google has already made a reduction in plastic use in its packaging since 2016 Pixabay

Starting in 2016 when it first launched its very own Pixel phone, Google has been trying to make its business model sustainable by going for mostly cardboard packaging although a little bit of single use plastic did end up getting used here or there. Another commitment Google has made is to go plastic-free on all its product packaging by 2025.

"To get us there, we need to uncover alternative, recyclable materials that will still protect our products", said David Bourne, Sustainability Systems Architect. Furthermore, Nest products like the Nest Audio and Nest Thermostat have 70% including acoustic fabric and 75% recycled plastics respectively but doesn't mention Chromecast with Google TV. Google's focus on incorporating recycled materials in hardware design not only supports our sustainability commitments but also enables our supply chain partners to confidently invest in and develop these types of materials. The company is further planning to reduce waste during the manufacturing process to achieve the UL 2799 Zero Waste to Landfill certification at all final assembly manufacturing sites by 2022.
