Former UK opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn has been suspended by the Labour Party over comments he made in the wake of a damning independent report on anti-Semitism within the party during his leadership.

The 130-page report said it found "significant failings in the way the Labour Party has handled anti-Semitism complaints over the last four years".

The EHRC's lead investigator, Alasdair Henderson, said that as the leader of the party, Corbyn "is ultimately accountable and responsible for what happened at that time".

The party responded by suspending Corbyn, who has represented Labour in Parliament since 1983.

"He has also had the whip removed from the Parliamentary Labour Party", said a Labour spokesman.

But he said that from 2018 "substantial improvements" were made, "making it much easier and swifter to remove anti-Semites".

"My team acted to speed up, not hinder the process", he added.

Starmer, elected leader in April, has vowed to stamp out prejudice and restore relations between the party and the Jewish community.

Keir Starmer, the current Labour leader, called the publication's report a "day of shame" for the party.

Labour has been grappling with allegations that anti-Semitism was allowed to fester under the 2015-2019 leadership of Corbyn, a long-time supporter of Palestinians and a critic of Israel.

Caroline Waters, interim EHRC chair, said the investigation into Labour "highlighted multiple areas where its approach and leadership to tackling anti-Semitism was insufficient".

"Never again will we fail to tackle anti-Semitism and never again will we lose your trust", he added.

"Under my leadership, we will have zero tolerance of anti-Semitism", Starmer added.

"That combination hurt Jewish people and must never be repeated".

The Jewish Labour Movement said blame for the "sordid, disgraceful chapter" in the party's history "lies firmly with those who held positions of leadership".

But the report said the two cases were "only the tip of the iceberg" and a further 18 "borderline" cases were found, involving councillors, local election candidates and constituency party office holders.

"And to think how many said it was all made up and exaggerated. Which amongst them will stand up and say that I am truly sorry?"

Those breaches related to political interference in anti-Semitism complaints, harassment, and failure to provide enough training to staff handling antisemitism complaints.

"Some complaints were unjustifiably not investigated at all".

In a statement today, she said: "Sadly, the EHRC report confirms what myself and many others knew, that there were unlawful acts and discrimination of anti-Semitism within the Labour party and the handling of it let many people down, causing deep divisions and wounds".

The report also found "evidence of political interference in the handling of anti-Semitism complaints throughout the period of the investigation".

The watchdog gave the party an unlawful act notice, meaning it has to publish an action plan within six weeks.
