More than an hour after he crossed the winning line as the clear victor of stage nine of this year's Tour of Spain in Aguilar, Irish cyclist Sam Bennett was disqualified for barging during the sprint.
It would have been a second stage victory of this year's race for Bennett - victor of two stages at the Tour de France last month - to add to his triumph on stage four.
"I didn't expect to win because Sam [Bennett] was ahead but when I saw the video, it wasn't a fair action from him", Ackermann said.
"If there is no hole, we have to stop".
Bennett bumped into Emils Liepins as the stage came to its conclusion.
Sam Bennett initially celebrated victory but was later relegated by officials
Bennett will now be looking for a win in Friday's stage to Suances which is not as flat as the one Bennett has just won, until he was relegated to second place. A win in the centre of Madrid on the last stage would give Bennett three fabulous triumphs to savour. There, he will hope to secure two things he thought he had won today, his 50 career win and the 100 stage success in Grand Tours for his Deceuninck Quick-Step team.
There was no change to the general classification and Richard Carapaz maintained his overall lead, as second-placed Primoz Roglic quickly recovered from a punctured tire to cross the line with other overall contenders.
"It was a bit sketchy, but we stayed upright". "We had seen the finish a first time and we wanted to be in a good position not to take any chance". In the end, it was quite an easy day.
Roglic, celebrating his 31st birthday, needed a bicycle change with about 13 kilometers (eight miles) left because of a mechanical issue but was able to rejoin the peloton.
