  • Grey's Anatomy's Ellen Pompeo: This 'Could Very Well Be' the Final Season

Whether or not this season is the last, Pompeo said she hopes the legacy of Grey's Anatomy is that it has "helped anybody become a better human being".

The series has been around since the dawn of time, entertaining the Neanderthals as they hit things with rocks, discovered fire, and compared their large, flat skulls.

Ellen has led the popular drama, which became the longest running American primetime medical series in 2019, since it debuted in 2005. It first aired back in 2005, and now has a whopping 16 seasons (!) under its belt.

Roughly 15 minutes into her first meeting with the "Grey's Anatomy" writers about the new season, showrunner Krista Vernoff said she knew there was no turning their back on Covid-19.

"I dedicate my season 17 to all who have fallen and to everyone of you who by the grace of God is still standing", Pompeo captioned a photo of herself on-set in September.

And c'mon, lads. If it is, they had a good run of it, surely.

But that was when her contract was renewed for two more seasons.

"We don't know when the show is really ending yet". As a producer, I feel like I have permission to do so.

"I don't know this is the previous year, but it could very well be". I mean, this is the final year of my contract law now.

Pompeo's co-stars agreed at the time that she is the heart of the show. "I don't take the decision lightly", Ellen said about whether or not to end the show. "But it could very well could be", she said, adding that as a producer she is "constantly fighting for the show to get better". I don't know if this is really going to be the last, but it could. very well to be " explained the actress, joking however that it could be misunderstanding statements. I'm very, very, very excited about this season.

Grey's Anatomy season 17 episode one, "All Tomorrow's Parties", was directed by guest star Debbie Allen from a script by Andy Reaser and Lynee E. Litt.
