  • Roglic surges back into Vuelta contention with stunning stage win

CANADIAN MICHAEL Woods timed his move to perfection on Tuesday to win the seventh stage at la Vuelta, as Richard Carapaz retained the overall lead.

Roglic finished 13 seconds in front of Carapaz on the 164-kilometer (102-mile) stage from Logroo to the Alto de Moncalvillo.

Woods, the EF Pro Cycling rider who finished second in Sunday's sixth stage, was 48th in the overall standings, nearly 40 minutes behind Carapaz.

Martin is third, 28 seconds off the lead while Hugh Carthy is fourth, 44 seconds back and Movistar's Enric Mas completes the front five nearly two minutes behind.

Jumbo-Visma's Tom Dumoulin was not at the start after choosing to quit the race due to fatigue. Roglic finished the stage in 19th place. I always like to win, so if there is a small opportunity I will take it.

Carapaz's Ineos Grenadiers team led the peloton for most of the race and the chasing group reined in the breakaway with around 10 kilometres to go as Roglic and Carapaz stepped up the pace on the final climb. "Then I had a bit of luck, I had the legs, and I got the win". "The truth is this duel has been quite nice and it motivates me because it makes it more for an exciting race, mostly for the fans but also for us with the level were riding at".

Carapaz maintained the overall lead by finishing in the peloton, which crossed the line nearly a minute later. Carapaz dug deep to briefly take charge but somehow Roglic found extra reserves to counter, with Carapaz this time unable to respond.

This is Roglič's second stage win on the 2020 Vuelta a España, as he seeks to overcome the disappointment of finishing second at the Tour de France.
