  • Saudi Arabia: Man arrested after attacking French consulate guard 'with sharp tool'

According to reports, the attacker used a "sharp tool" to stab the guard at the French compound in Jeddah.

Police in Mecca province, where Jeddah is situated, said the attacker was a Saudi, but it did not give the nationality of the guard, who they said had sustained minor injuries. He was hospitalised and his life is not in danger, the French Embassy said.

The incident comes just hours after three people were killed in a suspected terrorist attack near a church in the Notre-Dame area of Nice, France. French Embassy has said that the consulate was at the receiving end of an "attack by knife which targeted a guard".

A statement published by the French Embassy in Riyadh mirrored the details of the news agency's account, saying that the diplomatic mission condemned the "unjustified" attack. Nice's mayor described the attack as terrorism.

Also, French media reported that a knife-wielding man was killed after attempting to attack police in the city of Avignon.

The holiday marks the birthday of the Prophet Mohammed, which is being celebrated Thursday.

Thursday's attacks come in the wake of the murder of Samuel Paty, a French schoolteacher who was beheaded on 16 October by a young man of Chechen origin who said he did so after Paty showed cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad during a class on freedom of speech.

The man was arrested, Saudi state TV reported.

French officials have defended the right to display the cartoons, sparking anger and calls for a boycott of French products in parts of the Muslim world.
