Newcastle taking legal action against Premier League

Approval or rejection of the deal did not arrive before the consortium withdrew from the buying process, despite the deal being on the league's chief executive Richard Masters' table for 17 weeks prior.

The Premier League responded to Newcastle Consortium Supporters Limited's Gordon Stein and Keith Patterson in which they disclosed the club had already initiated such action. The buyers also refused the League's offer of independent arbitration.

Staveley, who had failed in a previous attempt to strike a deal, appeared confident of a breakthrough this time.

Newcastle say they have not previously commented on the proceedings "with respect to its conduct relating to the proposed takeover because of the confidentiality clause in the EPL's rules".

The club said in a public statement that it was aware of public reports which allegedly state "that the EPL referred to legal proceedings with the club".

"The source of some of the reports is said to be EPL". So, it appears that the EPL has leaked the contents of their letter to some people who have commented in the public domain.

But divulging that information to the fans group represented an alleged breach of the League's confidentiality clause, with both parties now reportedly having to retain privacy now that the case is active, leading to Newcastle's hard-hitting statement.

"There's got to be something there that the Premier League haven't done properly".

The two barristers that were selected to act on behalf of Newcastle United are Shaheed Fatima QC, an expert in human rights law, public law and public global law, and Nick De Marco QC, an expert in sports law.

The consortium included Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund PIF, PCP Capital Partners and the Reuben Brothers.
