Smithsonian again temporarily to close museums, National Zoo amid COVID-19 surge_china

A number of museums in Washington, DC are closing their doors again amid a spike in coronavirus cases.

By Sept. 25, seven of the Smithsonian's museums, plus the National Zoo, had reopened "with new health and safety measures due to the COVID-19 pandemic".

"Due to rising regional and national cases related to the COVID-19 pandemic, all Smithsonian museums, including the National Zoo, will temporarily close to the public starting Monday", the renowned Smithsonian Institute said in a statement.

In accordance with a gubernatorial order mandating statewide closure of institutions, The Art Institute of Chicago closed earlier this week, with the rest of the city's major institutions including the Field Museum and Shedd Aquarium expected to close today. A survey by the American Alliance of Museums published Tuesday found that almost one in three museums in the United States remains closed because of the pandemic, and that most of those have never reopened since the initial shutdown in March. Visitors were asked to reserve free timed-entry passes to visit most locations, as the locations were operating at reduced capacity.
