Another source, an European Union official, added: "The differences on the level playing field and fisheries remain major".

But on Monday, EU Commission spokesman Daniel Ferrie said that "while some progress has been made in drafting legal texts, significant fundamental divergences remain in the three key areas" that negotiations have centered on - the fishing industry, how to check compliance with the deal and the standards the United Kingdom must meet to export into the EU. Those discussions could bear fruit as early as next week, but the negotiations could still collapse.

"Time is short. Fundamental divergences still remain, but we are continuing to work hard for a deal", Barnier said on Twitter. The EU has frequently warned that its lawmakers will need some time to process any deal before ratifying it during their plenary session, scheduled for mid-December.

Problematic issues including fishing rights, the "level playing field" aimed at preventing unfair competition in areas such as workers' rights and state subsidies and the governance of any deal are yet to be resolved.

"British businesses export everything from electric cars to sparkling wine to Canada, and today's deal will ensure that trade goes from strength to strength", Prime Minister Boris Johnson said in a statement.

Britain is also expected to secure a trade deal with Australia by Christmas, according to former Australian prime minister turned British trade envoy Tony Abbott.

The two countries will begin negotiations next year to expand their commercial agreements to cover digital trade, the environment and women's economic empowerment, the U.K.'s Department for International Trade said in an emailed statement on Saturday.

"And, I am delighted that we are doing a deal, I hope that we will be able to conclude a deal, that will see, finally, the people of Britain able to access the supplies of Tim Tams - Tim Tam chocolate biscuits - in the quantities that we need".

The UK and Canada have agreed a deal to continue trading under the same terms as the current European Union agreement after the Brexit transition period ends.

The deal with Canada marks the second major trade deal to be secured ahead of the completion of the Brexit transition period, following the announcement of a trade deal with Japan over the summer. The talks will resume in London from Friday, said the news, if depending on the results of Covid-19 tests.
