Kate Rubins of NASA, together with Sergey Ryzhikov and Sergey Kud-Sverchkov of Roscosmos, lifted off on Russia's Soyuz MS-17 spacecraft from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on Wednesday (Oct. 14).

Two cosmonauts and a NASA astronaut blasted off on a high-speed journey to the International Space Station Wednesday, in the first such launch aboard a Russian capsule since SpaceX's game-changing debut manned flight from U.S. soil.

Their journey will be the first manned flight to the ISS to last just over three hours before docking - a new fast-track profile that takes half the time of standard trips to the orbital lab. The record was set during an unmanned resupply mission in August 2019.

Once the crew successfully docks with the ISS, they will relieve the station's NASA commander, Chris Cassidy, and Roscosmos cosmonauts Anatoly Ivanishin and Ivan Vagner, who will return to Earth next week.

The emergence of private players SpaceX and Boeing - part of NASA's Commercial Crew Program - has fuelled talk of a new "space race" between a number of countries. The Russian cosmonauts Serguei Rizhikov and Sergei Kud-Sdedchikov, as well as the NASA US astronaut Kathleen Rubins make up the first space crew after the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, for which hygiene measures were tightened.

In 2016, Rubins sequenced DNA in space for the first time.

"We will take with us additional equipment, which will allow us to detect the place of this leak more precisely, " he told reporters.

The previous leak was discovered by ground control when Then the US crew moved to the Russian part of the station, the modules were sealed, and their atmospheric pressure was examined.

Ahead of the launch, the NASA astronaut had expressed her excitement to Space.com.

In May, after five years of development, Elon Musk's aeronautics company, SpaceX, and NASA, launched the first manned flight from United States soil in almost a decade. The Crew-1 is now scheduled to launch some time in November according to NASA's blog.
