Meet The McLaren Artura, The Next Generation Of Hybrid Super

Classed by the British marque as a "High-Performance Hybrid", or HPH, the first of such a class, the Artura is the beginning of a new era, and is entirely new from the ground up.

So how do you feel about Artura as a name? There've been rumors - and trademark filings - suggesting that the supercar maker would ditch its numerical naming scheme, so this move isn't all that surprising.

The name is prominently shown in two new photos of the car's rear end, where it is placed between the high-mounted exhausts, along with the McLaren badge.

Designed, developed and produced at the McLaren Composites Technology Centre (MCTC) in the United Kingdom, the company says the all-new flexible structure will underpin the next generation of McLaren hybrid supercars coming to market over the coming years.

Even still, McLaren says Artura will be capable of performance levels we've come to expect from its range of larger-capacity V8 cars.

Finally, CEO Mike Flewitt has said of the Artura: "Every element of the Artura is all-new. but it draws on decades of McLaren experience in pioneering super-lightweight race and road vehicle technologies to bring all of our expertise in electrification to the supercar class". The hybrid powertrain should make more than the 600 horsepower (447 kilowatts) and 443 pound-feet (600 Newton-meters) of torque produced in the company's twin-turbo 3.8-liter V8.

Despite the added heft of batteries, McLaren has kept the total weight figure down thanks to the use of lightweight materials in the chassis, powertrain and body panels. Company boss Mike Flewitt has said the new vehicle would increase in weight by 30 to 40 kilograms (66 to 88 pounds).

The Artura will be the first McLaren built on the company's new McLaren Carbon Lightweight Architecture (MCLA) platform that it says is optimised for hybrid powertrains and latest-generation driver technologies.

According to McLaren, its new hybrid vehicle will draw upon the knowledge gained from its previous electrified models.

Set to arrive in 2021, the Artura will be McLaren's first hybrid series production supercar, coming after more extreme models such as the P1 hypercar and the Speedtail hyper-GT. We doubt a debut is far.
