'The Queen's Gambit' Is Breaking Viewership Records On Netflix

Like all the viewership data that Netflix has released this year, these new numbers reflect how many people "chose to watch" - in other words, how many people watched at least two minutes of a given show or movie.

Netflix isn't required to disclose their viewership numbers and tends to only do so when the numbers are exceptional, meaning its not possible to say what the other top-viewed limited series are.

Deadline reports The Queen's Gambit has hit the No. 1 spot in 63 countries, including the United Kingdom, and the top ten in 92 countries overall.

"The Queen's Gambit", the buzzy, female-led drama set in the 1960s chess world, has become Netflix Inc.'s most popular limited scripted series ever.

"Three years ago when Scott Frank ('Godless") first approached us about adapting "The Queen's Gambit' - Walter Tevis' 1983 book about a young chess prodigy - we felt it was a compelling tale", Netflix VP of original series Peter Friedlander wrote in a blog post.

It's kind of an unusual hit for Netflix, which usually sees its true-crime docuseries or genre shows become major hits (only Tiger King retains the most-viewed record over The Queen's Gambit, with 64 million views in is first 28 days). The Witcher, which is now shooting its second season, remains the service's biggest debut for an original series overall, bringing in 76 million households in that same timeframe.
