Argentina soccer legend Diego Maradona has died at the age of 60, a source close to his family confirmed to CNN.

Most football fans remember him best for his performances in an Argentina shirt at the 1982, 1986 or 1990 World Cups.

Priyanka Chopra Jonas, who is now in London, has taken to social media to mourn the loss of Argentinian football legend Diego Maradona.

"What a player he was - undoubtedly the best of his era and up there with the likes of Pele among the greatest ever".

"He leaves us but he doesn't go anywhere because Diego is eternal".

President Alberto Fernandez immediately announced three days of national mourning in the South American country.

He suffered a heart attack at his home in the outskirts of Buenos Aires, Argentinian media and acquaintances of the former player said.

The fifth of eight children, he got his first football when he was just three and never looked back.

Argentina beat West Germany 3-2 in the final and although Maradona did not score, he led the Germans a merry dance.

The first goal was scored with his fist but officials on the field did not see it.

A magician with the ball - deceptively quick and a visionary passer - Maradona is considered by some as the greatest football player ever, edging out that other great, Brazil's Pele. He later said, "It was partly by the hand of God and partly with the head of Maradona".

The Brazilian and Argentine were jointly named best player of the 20th century by Federation Internationale de Football Association in 2000.

He moved to Barcelona but was singled out for rough treatment by opposing defenders and soon fell out of love with the Spanish club.

Maradona's 115 goals in all competitions was a club record that stood for 26 years and his heroics came at a time when Serie A was the world's strongest, richest league, where the likes of Michel Platini and Zico strutted their stuff in front of bulging, bouncing stadiums.

"You will always be in our hearts", a translation of the statement read. "There are no words to describe the pain we're going through".

He was honoured with a minute's silence before Wednesday's Champions League games in Europe. Maradona gained 54 percent of the vote, Pele was second with 18 percent.

He also had a son, Diego Junior, born in Naples in 1986, although he only acknowledged paternity in 2004.
