Oscars 2021: Jallikattu Is India's Official Entry

India has made its selection for Oscars 2021 Best worldwide Feature Film category and its Malayalam director Lijo Jose Pellissery's "Jallikattu".

Jallikattu is the second Malayalam film to be submitted as the country's entry to the Oscars in the past decade after Adaminte Makan Abu in 2011.

Jallikattu is based on the short story Maoist by Hareesh and stars Antony Varghese, Chemban Vinod Jose, Sabumon Abdusamad, and Santhy Balachandran.

The film was chosen out of 27 films that include The Disciple, Shakuntala Devi, Shikara, Chhapaak, AK vs AK, Bhonsle, Chhalaang, Eeb Allay Ooo, Check Post, Atkan Chatkan, Kaamyaab, Chintu Ka Birthday, Bittersweet among others.

Sharing the reason behind the movie's selection, committee chairperson Rahul Rawail said, "It is a film which really brings out the raw side of human beings, that we are worse than animals". The film has been depicted wonderfully and it has been shot very well. The emotions, which come out, moved all of us.

Released in Kerala in October 2019, Jallikattu was premiered at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival and the 24th Busan International Film Festival, where it received much acclaim. The movie was particularly praised for Pellissery's spectacular directing effort, ably supported by Girish Gangadharan's cinematography and Renganaath Ravee's wild sound design work. The film which has been nominated by the jury to represent India at the Oscars is the Malayalam film Jallikattu.

Pellissery was feted with the Best Director award at the 50th International Film Festival of India (IFFI).

The 93rd Academy Awards are all set to be held on April 25, 2021 in Los Angeles, United States.
