But when it comes to serious eye injuries, there are limits to a players' ability to tough it out, and that's why the New York Islanders announced Wednesday that "after numerous and extensive medical exams" the 36-year-old defenceman's National Hockey League career has come to a close.

It was the second injury to the same eye in Boychuk's career. "It was a life choice". Boychuk needed 90 stitches to fix a cut above his eyelid. The pandemic shut down the league nine days later as he was preparing to return. The open-ice hit revealed to Boychuk how bad his vision had.

Boychuck has two years left on a seven-year, $42 million contract he signed with the Islanders in March 2015. He spent six seasons with the Islanders.
