Amazon Prime Video acquires India rights for New Zealand cricket

The multi-year deal between Amazon and the New Zealand cricket board will give Prime Video the right to stream worldwide cricket matches to be played in New Zealand-men's and women's crickets across ODI, T20 and test formats starting late 2021. The company announced the deal, struck for an undisclosed amount, on Tuesday morning.

New Zealand Cricket's Chief Executive, David White, highlighted the unrivalled popularity of the sport in India: "This partnership with Amazon Prime Video is massive for NZC - we're delighted and proud to be teaming up with such a famous and successful brand".

The deal between the streaming platform and cricket board includes two New Zealand tours by the Indian Cricket Team, one of which is scheduled in early 2022 and the second one is yet to be announced.

Pitch International, New Zealand Cricket's (NZC) international media rights advisors, worked on the deal alongside the national body.

Prime Video is a streaming service that offers Prime members a collection of award winning Amazon Original series, thousands of movies and TV shows. The rights for 2020-2021 season starting later this month is being broadcasted by Amazon.

Amazon has acquired the media rights package in India for global cricket games played in New Zealand, as part of an agreement with New Zealand Cricket (NZC) that runs from the 2020/21 summer season until 2025/26. Notably, Prime members will get access to both men's and women's cricket held from 2021 to the 2025-2026 season.

The Indian territory New Zealand Cricket rights package is the latest in Amazon Prime Video's growing line-up of live sports around the world, including Thursday Night Football, the Premier League, ATP Tour Events, WTA, the US Open (tennis), UEFA Champions League, Autumn Nations Cup (rugby), and the Seattle Sounders FC. With this, Amazon Prime has gone where no Indian streaming platform has gone before.

In India, Amazon competes with global rivals Disney and Netflix Inc. Amazon Prime Video starting to stream live cricket might break the duopoly that Star and Sony share in India.
