A 40-year-old Chennai-based participant in the trial for the "Covishield" vaccine developed by the Pune-based Serum Institute of India (SII) has sent a legal notice to the company seeking Rs 5 crore as compensation.

Apart from SII, Modi also visited the vaccine development facilities of Zydus Cadila in Ahmedabad and Bharat Biotech in Hyderabad.

After his hour-long visit in this facility, PM Modi tweeted, "At the Bharat Biotech facility in Hyderabad, was briefed about their indigenous COVID-19 vaccine".

On the other vaccine, Novavax, where SII has a tie up, Poonawalla said it is two months behind Astrazeneca and the same process will be followed in terms of trials and approvals.

A test 11 days later revealed the presence of antibodies, "proof" that the person had indeed received the vaccine and not a placebo.

Poonwalla said that the vaccine will initially be distributed in India, after which the firm will move on to the countries covered under the World Health Organization-backed global initiative COVAX. Poonawalla ruled out additional testing of the vaccine in light of this "error".

Poonawalla also disclosed that the SII will apply for emergency authorisation of the COVID-19 vaccine in the next two weeks.

SII is still to announce results from its combined Phase-2 and Phase-3 testing of the vaccine. It had earlier said that this could be expected sometime in December.

Dubbed as Covishield, the COVID-19 vaccine is now in the Phase III clinical trial in India.

A press statement by the Prime Minister's Office said: "The scientists expressed joy that the prime minister met them face to face in order to boost their morale and help accelerate their efforts at this critical juncture in the vaccine development journey".

PM Modi visited the manufacturing facility of SII in Pune on Saturday, to personally review the vaccine development. "There was very little to explain to him, except for going into detail on different variable vaccines and the challenges that they may face ahead", the CEO said. He also spoke on "how India is following sound principles of science in the entire journey of vaccine development, while also asking for suggestions to make the vaccine distribution process better".

"The Prime Minister expressed pride in the fact that India's indigenous vaccine development has progressed at such a rapid pace so far". He stressed that the Oxford University vaccine was "a good one" and effective against the disease. He said that for vaccines which much lower temperatures India's capacity for storage is negligible.

"As of now we don't have anything in writing of how many doses the Government of India would purchase, but the indication is three to four hundred million doses by July 2021", Poonawalla said. So far, many other nations including the United States, United Kingdom, the European Union, Australia and Israel have made deals to buy millions of doses of the vaccine.
