Romain Grosjean crash: Lewis Hamilton emotional statement after horror Bahrain GP incident

He was helped into an ambulance by marshals and limped as he did so.

Romain Grosjean escaped from a horrific first-lap crash at the Bahrain Grand Prix on Sunday (Nov 29) when his auto split in two and burst into flames.

A lengthy delay is expected while marshals work to clear away the significant wreckage of Grosjean's destroyed vehicle and work to fix the barriers which also sustained heavy damage.

Grosjean was able to clamber out of the wreckage despite a large fire starting nearly immediately, and was taken quickly to the medical vehicle.

The Bahrain GP was immediately put under a red flag while Grosjean was attended to and the barrier repaired.

Haas F1 team boss Guenther Steiner confirmed the driver has suffered burns to his hands and ankles, but is otherwise OK, but as a precaution he will be transferred to hospital. He seems to be OK.

As to the cause, Steiner said: "It looked like he was just moving across and went over the front wheel and just went full speed into the barrier". He seems to be doing good, hopefully, there is nothing coming.

Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton posted to Instagram immediately after the crash, saying: "I'm so grateful Roman [sic] is safe, wow".

"This is a reminder to us all".

"Thankful to the FIA for the massive strides we've taken for Romain to walk away from that safely".
