UK police arrest over 60 in anti-lockdown protests

According to British Health Secretary Matt Hancock, most of England will face harsh coronavirus restrictions in a new three-tier system when the lockdown ends next week, with London being listed in Tier Two.

Police in London said on Saturday that they had made over 60 arrests and expected that figure to rise, as they tried to break up anti-lockdown and anti-vaccine protests.

Grassroots activist group Save Our Rights UK had planned a series of demonstrations to take place across the weekend in London to protest against the second national lockdown.

"We continue to urge people to go home", the force added.

The force said: "These were for a number of different offences, including breaching coronavirus restrictions".

Hundreds of demonstrators marched through the city near Oxford Street chanting "freedom" on Saturday, with some carrying placards reading "Stop Controlling Us" and "No More Lockdowns", Sky News said. "If not, you may face arrest or enforcement action". "We've seen our police officers yet again do incredible work to ensure that they help to stop the spread of this very bad virus", she said. A protest is not a permitted exemption to the prohibition on gatherings under current coronavirus regulations in England and those who attend risk enforcement action by officers, the Met said.
