Gordon Hayward sign-and-trade with Hornets gives Celtics an extra boost

The Celtics and Hornets completed a sign-and-trade Sunday that sends Hayward and two future second-round draft picks to Charlotte and a conditional future second-round pick to Boston, the teams announced.

The size of the trade exception wasn't revealed by the Celtics, but it's expected to total $27.9 million, the largest in league history, according to ESPN's Bobby Marks.

A trade exception lasts one year from the day it's created.

The trade exception is the same amount as Hayward's salary this season with the Hornets, which the Celtics can use to absorb salaries in trades. That matters quite a bit, since the Celtics won't have cap space to make additions otherwise.

The Hornets and Hayward had agreed in principle to a four-year, $120 million deal on November 21, officially ending Hayward's three-year stint in Beantown. It allows a team over the cap to acquire a player in a trade without having to send offsetting salaries in exchange.
