Elon Musk’s SpaceX sends 2 astronauts into space

SpaceX has made history by becoming the first private company to send humans into orbit, ushering in a new era for commercial space travel.

Demo-2 marks the first launch of NASA astronauts on a commercial spacecraft and the first launch of American astronauts into orbit on a USA -built vehicle from America since 2011.

The US space agency posted a video of Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley stepping into the ISS and being greeted by the three spacefarers who had been living on its board for months.

It will take Falcon 9 nine minutes to reach orbit and then Crew Dragon will have a 19-hour journey to the International Space Station once it separates from the rocket.

After a short stay on the ISS (the exact length of which has not yet been determined), the two astronauts will return to Earth in the Dragon and splash down in the Atlantic Ocean with parachutes. (1:22 MST) marking the first time in almost a decade that NASA astronauts have launched into orbit from Cape Canaveral, Florida. Future landings with the engines may well be in the cards, though. The craft was built under NASA's Commercial Crew Program and was developed entirely by SpaceX.
