Fireball spotted! Meteor sighting lights up sky over Japan and social media

A massive meteor was spotted in the sky across Japan and prompted a variety of reactions online.

Many people in western Japan saw this rare sight on social media, which lasted a few seconds.

According to NHK public television, its cameras in the central prefectures of Aichi, Mie and elsewhere captured the spectacular incident in the southern sky.

A camera in the port of Nagoya showed the meteorite shining brightly near Earth, the Asahi newspaper reported.

Some experts said small fragments of the meteorite might have reached the ground.

According to local reports, the fireball, believed to be a bolide - a type of shooting star often compared to a full moon for its brightness - was spotted clearly from parts of western and central Japan.

Meteors are defined as rocks and ice ejected from comets as they move in their orbits around the sun.

When a meteoroid enters the Earth's upper atmosphere, it heats up due to friction from the air. The heat causes the gases around the meteorite to glow brightly and a meteorite appears.

There is also a small possibility of detecting fireballs that occur at night because very few people notice them.
