Hancock was speaking shortly after an announcement that Britain's medicines regulator had approved the Pfizer vaccine and that vaccination would start next week. "We've got to beat this, we've got to beat it together".
British Health Minister Matt Hancock told Times radio that thanks to leaving the EMA, the United Kingdom would "not go at the pace of the Europeans, who are moving a little bit more slowly".
"So from the bottom of my heart, I want to say thank you to everyone in Liverpool for getting this terrible virus under control".
"I'm confident now, with the news today, that from spring, from Easter onwards, things are going to be better", added Mr Hancock. I'm up for doing that.
Though Spahn has himself said he was proud that a German company, founded by a husband-and-wife team of Turkish immigrant background, had created the vaccine, he was not the only official irritated at Britons celebrating being the first to approve as a national triumph.

As a result, Piers told Mr Hancock that he wants to get the jab live on GMB as a way to convince viewers that it's safe. But also, what I would say is don't listen to me, listen to the clinicians, listen to the experts, people like Jonathan Van Tam, JVT as he's become known. "He's said he's called his mum and said, 'Mum if you get the call from the NHS make sure you get there and get vaccinated". "We monitor this very carefully and actually the number of people who want to have the vaccine is increasing, and that's good because obviously that's the right thing to do", he said on LBC radio. "I just feel like it's really important if we are going to get through this that enough people take it".
Asked if there could be roll outs before Christmas, he said: "Let's hope so [that the vaccine will come before Christmas]". He added it was "logistically and operationally easier" due to the fact it didn't need low temperatures when delivered.
Others hit out at Piers for thinking he would have any sway over whether people take the vaccine or not.
During the interview, Mr Hancock also weighed in on the debate about whether scotch eggs can be counted as a substantial meal in pubs in Tier 2. So a Scotch egg absolutely can be.
