Midday fireball, boom thrill gazers from Ontario to Virginia

  • People in Toronto report seeing fireball fly across the sky

The noontime show was likely a disintegrating meteor, according to the Associated Press.

Shortly after 12 p.m. the meteor began to burn so bright it blinded cameras on the CN Tower in Toronto as is continued its trek towards Buffalo.

"It was a perfectly BRIGHT sunny day without a cloud in the sky and the fireball was 100% clear and bright".

Eyewitnesses across NY and Southern Ontario reported seeing the shooting star, but one resident named Bekka was positioned in the flawless place for a peek as is passed overhead. The color of the display apparently was in the eye of the beholder.

Because most of those loud boom reports were from the Syracuse, New York area, that's likely where the meteor exploded, said Robert Lunsford of the AMS in Geneseo.

Another eyewitness in Ontario said, "Astonishing, amazing, still get goosebumps talking about it". "The train was flaming white, wide and long, no smoke".

All fireballs, which are bright meteors, produce sound waves, sometimes detectable only by sensitive microphones, Campbell-Brown said by email.
