Multiple casualties in large explosion near Bristol

The warehouse in Avonmouth, Bristol, where fire crews, police and paramedics are responding to a "large" explosion.

Chief Inspector Mark Runacres from the Avon and Somerset Police force said inquiries were underway into what caused the explosion at Wessex Water's Bristol water recycling center.

The explosion's thought to have taken place within a chemical tank on the site.

The Avon Fire and Rescue Service said it was alerted at 11:22am to a large explosion in the industrial area of Avonmouth located near Bristol, which is about 195km west of London.

Avon Fire and Rescue Service Area Manager Matt Peskett confirmed crews from Avonmouth, Southmead, Yate, Patchway, Hicks Gate, Kingswood, Weston-super-Mare and Temple were all sent to the incident. We can confirm there are multiple casualties on site.

South Western Ambulance Service said it was responding to a "serious incident". Crews from @AFRSAvonmouth @AFRSSouthmead @AFRSYate @AFRSPatchway @AFRSKingswood & @AFRSTemple are in attendance. "The incident is ongoing".

"We have attended with multiple resources alongside fire service and police personnel".

The fire service said they were aware of "casualties" but could not say how many people had been injured in the incident.
