Update 12/01 1:39 pm PT: Netflix confirmed that Elliot Page will continue playing the role of Vanya Hargreeves in The Umbrella Academy, according to Variety.

Netflix is now in the process of updating the 33-year-old actor's name on all titles on their service in which he features. Netflix commented on Page's coming out letter with support.

The show is returning for a third season and the release date is unknown, Digital Spy reports. Based on the comic book series written by Gerard Way, the series follows a dysfunctional group of adopted, super powered siblings who reunite to solve the mystery of their father's death. The plot is reminiscent of X-Men, in which Page played Kitty Pryde (also known as Shadowcat) in two of the films.

While many lauded Netflix for the decision and wondered if show writers would now make Vanya's character transgender, others questioned it and shared their confusion.

Elliot's decision to publicly reveal he is transgender comes nearly three years after the couple tied the knot in a secret ceremony, having only been dating publicly for six months.

In 2018, Page married Canadian dancer Emma Portner, who was quick to support her partner, of whom she says she is "very proud". "I totally stuffed this up", she wrote, adding she was thinking about what was up next instead of about what she was saying in the moment.
