Alberta reports new daily high of 1854 COVID-19 cases, 14 deaths

Fourteen more deaths were reported in the past 24 hours bringing the total to 561.

Even though the majority of the cases are in the Calgary and Edmonton zones, the virus is spreading in many rural communities. "That is why it is important we all follow the key public health measures wherever we live", said Dr. Deena Hinshaw.

There is rising COVID-19 transmission across the province, with Dr. Hinshaw saying this isn't just a Calgary or Edmonton problem.

She called it "a provincial problem within the context of a global problem".

"When you look at the 15 local geographic areas with the highest active case rates in Alberta, one-third of them are outside of Calgary and Edmonton". She also noted that Alberta is seeing growing outbreaks in the Central, North and South zones. "That's why it's important for all Albertans, rural and urban, take COVID19 and do everything possible to limit the spread".

She also thanked those who are asking Alberta Health questions when they are unsure. Unfortunately, our overall active case rate proves that COVID-19 doesn't care where you live or what your postal code is.

The second wave of the pandemic has hit Alberta far harder than the first.

Lacombe County now has 46 active cases, a decrease of one, while Lacombe has 43, an increase of four.

There are now 336 St. Albert residents who currently have COVID-19, with 36 new cases added in the past 24 hours.

The total number of cases as of Thursday was 63,023, which includes 17,743 active cases, 44,705 people who have recovered, and 575 deaths.

A COVID-19 vaccine will be in Alberta as early as January, but the holiday season remains a challenge as cases and hospitalization continue to see a rapid increase, officials warned.
