Barcelona Interim President Says Club Should Have Sold Lionel Messi

Meanwhile, Messi's future with Barcelona is in major doubt after a tumultuous summer that saw him request a move away, only to rescind that request after the club vowed he would have to battle them in court over the validity of his release clause.

Messi will become a free agent this summer with clubs able to approach him starting in January. "Economically, that would have been desirable", Tusquets told Catalan radio Rac1.

Tusquets added that Messi's release, including the transfer fee and the money saved in wages, would have helped as "La Liga is demanding salary caps".

But now interim president Tusquets - who has stepped in following Josep Bartomeu's departure - has admitted he would have parted ways with Messi from an economic viewpoint, with the club suffering hugely amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Bartomeu resigned in October, with Tusquets taking interim control of the club until the next board-level elections occur in January 2021.
