Questions remain about how durable that protection is and whether the vaccines also reduce transmission and prevent asymptomatic infections.

About 20 million people are expected to be vaccinated with the Pfizer and Modern vaccines in December alone.

The vaccine expert's comments come as states are busy preparing to distribute the vaccine in as few as two weeks. "We want a rhythmic, vaccine distribution so states can better manage it for priorities as they develop it".

Slaoui told The Washington Post if Americans who feel hesitant about getting vaccinated took time to understand the trial data, he felt "confident" they would agree to take the drug. In mid-November, he said about 70 million to 80 million people in the USA were likely to be vaccinated by the end of February.

Speaking in Canberra today, Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt said Australia is "doing magnificently" to combat the coronavirus pandemic, meaning we have time to follow the original vaccination rollout plan.

But since Australia has largely brought community transmission under control, Hunt says there's no reason the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine can't be submitted for full Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) approval.

By the end of February, "we will have potentially immunized 100 million people, which is really more or less the size of the significant at-risk population: the elderly, the healthcare workers, the first-line workers, people with comorbidities", Slaoui said.

Moderna President Dr. Stephen Hoge said that there were 30 cases of severe diseases in the last batch of the results without any cases in the people that received the vaccine.
