"High value" global business travelers will not have to quarantine when traveling to England, even if they come from places classed as high-risk for the coronavirus, the U.K.'s Transport Secretary Grant Shapps announced this evening. The exemptions come into place at 4 a.m. on Saturday.

Shapps said the change will allow "more travel to support the economy and jobs".

Mr Shapps tweeted this evening: 'New Business Traveller exemption: From 4am on Sat 5th Dec high-value business travellers will no longer need to self-isolate when returning to ENGLAND from a country NOT in a travel corridor, allowing more travel to support the economy and jobs.

United Kingdom and global performing artists, TV production staff, journalists and elite sportsmen or women newly-recruited to team "bubbles" will also gain exemptions alongside the specialist staff already free from quarantine.

The Department for Transport subsequently published details of the proposals and said people will have to "meet a set of required criteria" in order to be awarded the business exemption.

The Department for Transport said the change relates to individuals "undertaking specific business activity which would deliver a significant benefit to the United Kingdom economy - including activity that creates or preserves 50+ UK jobs".

According to the DfT, sectors such as the media and elite sport were also included as they "require specific, high-talent individuals who rely on global connections".

It said further information would be available on the government website when the exemptions came into force.

It also applies to "high talent" individuals working in certain arts and sports jobs that require global travel.

The Government continues to use its "travel corridors" scheme to decide which countries have to be subject to self-isolation requirements.

As things stand, all passengers arriving in England from overseas are required to self-isolate for 14 days, unless they are coming from a country included on a safe travel list available on the United Kingdom government website.

The government had previously announced that the quarantine rules would change for all passengers on Dec 15, in that people would have the option of taking a Covid-19 test after five days of self-isolation. Any traveller who tests negative for Covid from the fifth day will be able to stop self-isolating.
