A tiger attacked and seriously injured a volunteer at a big cat sanctuary in Tampa, Florida, run by Carole Baskin, who was featured prominently in the Netflix docuseries "Tiger King". Its main subject, Joe Exotic, whose given name is Joseph Maldonado-Passage, is now serving time in federal prison after being convicted of hiring a hit on Baskin over her seeking to shut down his big cat attraction for breeding cubs and allowing in the public. Couser was one of the volunteers who helped unload Kimba when he arrived at the sanctuary. She has volunteered with the sanctuary for five years and has worked with lions, tigers and the sanctuary's other large cats for nearly three years as a "Green Level Keeper". Baskin also provided some information to the Herald in an email.
Apparently, Kimba was locked in an enclosure that was away from where he was usually fed because cameras were being installed in his usual feeding area. Couser opened a guillotine tunnel door that was supposed to remain shut.
"When she went to raise the second door she saw it was clipped shut". She was at the wrong feeding lockout, according to the rescue. Despite the incredibly violent attack, we're told Candy is expected to survive. "It is against our protocols for anyone to stick any part of their body into a cage with a cat in it".
Kimba latched on to Couser's arm.
Another worker heard the commotion and came running as Kimba dropped his grip.

Other members of the sanctuary present at the scene rushed to assist Couser, stopping the bleeding with a tourniquet until an ambulance arrived.
Couser is now being treated at St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa.
He described her injury as "serious".
Her arm was packed in ice in order to try to save it from amputation, according to the press release. Further updates on the situation, as well as Couser's condition, have yet to be released. While she was able to move her fingers, her arm was broken in three places and her shoulder was "badly damaged", the sanctuary said. She will need surgery. While the Baskins say Kimba was acting normally, the tiger will be kept in quarantine for the following 30 days just to be safe. "Please keep Candy and her family in your hearts, as we will be doing, in hopes for a full recovery".
Grief counseling is being made to staff and volunteers of Big Cat Rescue, who met after the incident to discuss what happened, according to Baskin. It's unclear if Baskin was at the sanctuary at the time of the incident.
"Carole reminded everyone that this sort of tragedy can happen in the blink of an eye and that we cannot relax our guard for a second around these unsafe cats".
