USWNT lawsuit settlement: What it means for equal pay

"It is my hope that we continue down this path and are able to find a resolution on all aspects of this litigation".

Players sued the USSF in March 2019 claiming they have not been paid equitably under their collective bargaining agreement compared to what is received by the men's team, which failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup.

The agreement over working conditions clears the way for the USWNT to appeal a judge's decision in May, which ruled in U.S. Soccer's favor over the USWNT's pay discrimination claim.

"Accordingly, plaintiffs can not now retroactively deem their CBA (collective bargaining agreement) worse than the MNT (men's national team) CBA by reference to what they would have made had they been paid under the MNT's pay-to-play terms structure when they themselves rejected such a structure", Klausner added.

Although the wage discrimination claims widely seen as the centerpiece of the lawsuit remain at issue, the settlement on working conditions represents something of a breakthrough.

"We are pleased that the USWNT players have fought for - and achieved - long overdue equal working conditions", players' spokeswoman Molly Levinson told the Associated Press, adding that the legal battle over equal pay was not dead and that an appeal was being planned.

US Soccer president Cindy Cone, who took over the post earlier this year, called the settlement "an important and welcomed moment for US Soccer and the women's national team players". The union representing national team players is not a party in the lawsuit. Following the USA victory in last year's World Cup final in Lyon, France, the crowd chanted "Equal Pay!" as players celebrated on the field. This is not over yet. And even though Cone said she and the federation are "100% committed to equal pay", it appears the two sides are still considerably far apart on the issue of compensation. "Or else when I'm president, you can go elsewhere for World Cup funding".

In court documents reviewed by CBS, the federation argued that the USWNT had less responsibility than the men's national team.

The federation will also provide an equal number of chartered flights to the women's and men's teams, and it has agreed to offer comparable hotel accommodations for the teams. Will Wilson, who started as USSF CEO in March, said working conditions of the women will be equal to those of the next labor contract with the men.

"Coming to agreement on the working conditions was just the first step", Parlow Cone said.

U.S. Soccer will also enact a new "Senior National Team Professional Support Policy" that seeks to ensure equality of staffing while allowing each national team flexibility for its specific needs. U.S. Soccer argues that given the differences in the prize money apportioned by FIFA for men's and women's events, doing so would cause the federation financial harm.

At issue is Federation Internationale de Football Association prize money, with women's players arguing that they deserve the same prize money for winning the World Cup, as one example, as men's players would receive for winning that tournament. FIFA increased the total to $440 million for the 2022 men's World Cup and FIFA President Gianni Infantino has proposed FIFA double the women's prize money to $60 million for 2023. We have the best women's team in the world, and we are leaders in a lot of ways. "We've reached out to them". The women's team, which was seeking more than $66 million in damages, contested the ruling.

"We all know this isn't possible from a U.S. Soccer standpoint to make that up", Parlow Cone said.
