Alberta extends interval between first and second COVID-19 vaccine

Across the province, 38 Albertans lost their lives to COVID-19, bringing the amount who have died since the pandemic began up to 1,345.

The province saw 652 new cases after 9,300 tests were performed for a positivity rate of 6.8%.

A total of 96,052 cases have recovered.

The deaths of five more people were reported in the city on Tuesday, all linked to the outbreak at the Youville Home.

Altogether the data suggests, Hinshaw said, that the "vast majority" of Albertans followed her direction over the holidays and stayed within their household for Christmas.

Pfizer and Moderna studies have shown the effectiveness of the first shot is approximately 90 per cent two weeks after being administered.

The province had previously been booking the second dose three to four weeks after the first initial shot, but that is now being extended to 42 days. What's not clear is how long that single-dose protection will last without the second dose.

"Today is a hard day", the chief medical officer of health said, calling the decision a hard one to make.

Hinshaw said Alberta Health Service is working hard to expand the contact tracing capacity of the province and they are now able to reach out within 24 hours to all high priority cases, including schools, healthcare workers and long-term care workers.

"With more contact tracers and fewer cases, we are reducing the number of cases with unknown exposures".

Currently, up to 150 samples each week undergo full genetic sequencing.

The goal, Hinshaw told media, was to be able to sequence 100 samples every day, testing for the variants first found in South Africa and the United Kingdom.
