The province should receive 28,275 Pfizer and 20,700 Moderna doses this week, according to information from the federal government. Canada's population is just over 38 million.

This new, gene-based technology has proven effective in the development of the coronavirus vaccine developed by Pfizer and BioNTech in addition to the one created by Moderna. This version of the vaccine also requires two doses to be given to each recipient.

"There was no difference between the people who got it at day 19 and the people who got it at day 42 in how well the vaccine worked after the second dose and there was no decrease in protection between the first dose and the second dose", Henry said, referencing data from vaccine trials.

Welcoming the news, Jamie Greene, MSP, whose area includes North Ayrshire, said: "I am delighted that the Moderna vaccine has been approved for use and it will be another weapon in our fight against this very bad virus".
