Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny to fly to Russia on Sunday despite risks

  • Navalny was airlifted to Germany for treatment in August after collapsing on a plane in what Germany and other Western nations say was an attempt to murder him with a Novichok nerve agent

His announcement comes a day after Russia's Federal Prison Service (FSIN) asked the court to replace his 2014 suspended sentence in the Yves Rocher case with a real prison term, a signal that he could be jailed when he arrives in Russian Federation.

His spokeswoman Kira Yarmysh accused Russian authorities of trying to scare Navalny into not returning to Russia, something he has said he intends to do ahead of parliamentary elections due in September 2021. Just because I didn't leave. "The people who tried to kill me got offended because I survived, and now they are threatening to put me behind bars".

"(Putin's) servants are acting as usual by fabricating new criminal cases against me.

"This morning, while doing my routine exercises, which I have been doing for several months, I caught myself thinking that I probably nearly healthy and I can complete my recovery at home", Navalny expalined.

'Therefore, this morning I went to Pobeda company website and bought tickets.

He said he will fly home from Germany on Sunday.

Labs in Germany, France and Sweden, and tests by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, established that he was exposed to a Soviet-era Novichok nerve agent.

Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny said he plans on returning to Moscow this week despite facing legal threats from Russian officials.

This week, Russia's prison service applied to a court to have Mr Navalny's suspended sentence in an embezzlement case from 2014 converted to a real jail term.

Last month, Navalny released the recording of an undercover phone call he said he made to a man he described as a member of a group of FSB officers who allegedly poisoned him in August and then tried to cover it up.

Navalny has said the cases are politically motivated and are meant to deter him from returning to Russian Federation and to force him into exile now that the effort to kill him has failed.

In an Instagram post Wednesday, he said he purchased a plane ticket to Russian Federation that morning after feeling "almost healthy enough to come back home".

Navalny is Russia's most prominent opposition leader and has always been a thorn in the Kremlin's side, publishing high-profile investigations into alleged corruption among powerful officials and building a grass-roots protest movement.

She said at the time: 'There's no way he could appear at the Moscow Criminal Inspectorate tomorrow.
