Sarah, Duchess of York, to publish debut historical romance

Kaye has written more than 50 novels for Mills & Boon set across the ages and her books and novellas have sold more than 1.5 million copies in over 20 countries.

The royal was inspired to write the novel after researching her family history and was struck by her great-great-aunt Lady Margaret Montagu Douglas Scott - as Margaret is her middle name.

The novel follows the main character to Ireland, where the Duchess went in the aftermath of her mother's death in a auto crash in 1998, and also to the USA, where she famously reinvented herself after her divorce, signing up as an ambassador for WeightWatchers.

She recently revived her children's book series, Budgie the Helicopter.

And fans of Mills & Boon's "bodice ripping" romances are unlikely to be disappointed, as it has a love story at its heart.

The duchess' ex-husband, and their children, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, have not yet read the manuscript.

The narrative of Lady Margaret incorporates research into the Duchess's heritage and draws upon her own unique life journey and experiences. "Digging into the history of the Montagu-Douglas Scotts, I first came across Lady Margaret, who intrigued me because she shared one of my given names", she added.

"But although her parents, the Duke and Duchess of Buccleuch, were close friends with Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, I was unable to discover much about my namesake's early life, and so was born the idea which became Her Hear for a Compass".

The duchess said: "I drew on many parallels from my life for Lady Margaret's journey".

She was also an executive producer of the 2009 historical film The Young Victoria - which went on to receive three Academy Award Nominations and two BAFTAs.

"I am proud to bring my personal brand of historical fiction to the publishing world".

She thoroughly enjoyed the experience and is already working on her second.

Mills & Boon, which is owned by publishing giant Harper Collins and accounts for 16 per cent of the UK's romance fiction market, said the book would "sweep the reader from the drawing rooms of Victoria's court... to the slums of London and the mercantile bustle of 1870s New York", all the while telling the story of a heroine "who desires to break the mould - and falling in love along the way".

The 400-page book will be released on August 3 in the USA and UK.

Lisa Milton, an executive publisher for Mills & Boon, said: "This brilliant sweeping story is flawless for our existing readers as well as reaching fans of bestselling novelists such as Philippa Gregory and Anne O'Brien".

The duchess's novel is a saga that takes in events at Queen Victoria's court and the grand country houses of Scotland and Ireland, and crosses into the slums of London and on to the bustle of 1870s NY.

She can regularly be found reading stories for children on her YouTube series, Storytime with Fergie and Friends.
