Six rangers at a prominent national park in Congo are dead and another was badly injured in a horrific ambush carried out Sunday by "armed assailants", park officials announced.
"Virunga National Park deeply regrets the tragic loss of life among its Rangers, who work tirelessly and with dedication to protect both the Park and the neighbouring communities from the tyranny of armed groups".
There was no immediate claim of responsibility, though past attacks on Virunga park rangers have been blamed on several armed groups that vie for control of eastern Congo's natural resources.
"Their sacrifice will not be forgotten nor be in vain".
A ranger who was seriously wounded in the attack was evacuated to hospital in the city of Goma and his injuries were no longer considered life-threatening, the statement added.

"The Rangers of the Congolese Institute for the Conservation of Nature are agents of the Congolese State".
Almost 700 armed rangers work in Virunga - Africa's oldest nature reserve - where at least 200 have been killed in attacks going back more than a decade, AFP reports.
The park, which was inaugurated in 1925, has been caught up in the persistent unrest that has been plaguing eastern DRC, witnessing repeated attacks by rebel groups, militias and poachers.
More than a thousand different species of animals, including a third of the world's mountain gorillas, live at the park in Nyamitwitwi. At least six rangers were killed in an ambush Sunday, less than nine months after a dozen rangers and five civilians were massacred, the New York Times reports.
