  • Twitter blocks 70,000 QAnon accounts after US Capitol riot, shares slide

Twitter has suspended "more than 70,000 accounts" linked to the QAnon conspiracy theory following the attack on the US Capitol by a mob of President Donald Trump's supporters.

In many cases, a single individual operated numerous accounts, driving up the total number of affected accounts, the company said in a blog post.

"These accounts were engaged in sharing harmful QAnon-associated content at scale and were primarily dedicated to the propagation of this conspiracy theory across the service", the company said.

Twitter made a decision to permanently suspend President Donald Trump's account after years in which Trump tested the boundaries of what he could say, violating the company's rules against election misinformation, glorifying violence, and falsehoods about COVID-19.

The QAnon conspiracy theory is centered on the baseless belief that Trump is waging a secret campaign against "deep state" enemies and a child sex trafficking ring run by satanic pedophiles and cannibals. Twitter has previously tried to crack down on QAnon, removing more than 7,000 accounts in July.

Deutsche Bank will no longer do business with Trump and his company, a person familiar with the matter told Bloomberg . Rioting supporters of President Donald Trump climb the west wall of the the US Capitol in Washington.

The social network began its purge on Friday, shortly after it had permanently suspended Trump's account for language that could incite violence.

Mr Trump retorted that he would be "building out our own platform in the near future".

The moves are part of a growing crackdown by the nation's leading social media companies in what they say is an effort to prevent further violence. The company alleged that Parler had violated the terms of service of its cloud computing division, Amazon Web Services (AWS), for failing to deal with an increase in violent social media.

Shares in Facebook, which suspended Mr Trump's account through to January 20 - his last day in office, and possibly indefinitely, ended Monday down 4 per cent.

The building itself is largely empty because staff have been working remotely for nearly a year due to the pandemic.
