  • Open-World Star Wars Game Announced

The new Star Wars game is described as a "story-driven, open-world" game, and it's being developed by Massive Entertainment - the team behind The Division, its sequel, and Far Cry 3.

What we do know is that Julian Gerighty, Director of The Division 2, will be leading the development process as Creative Director. "Ultimately, we have final approval over everything", Douglas Reilly, VP of Lucasfilm Games said.

"The Star Wars galaxy is an unbelievable source of motivation for our teams to innovate and push the boundaries of our medium", said Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot. The game will come from Massive Entertainment, Ubisoft's studio based in Malmö, Sweden. And that's not all - because word has just arrived that a new open-world Star Wars game is coming, set to unleash players into a galaxy far, far away, from the people over at Ubisoft. Unlike the Indiana Jones project, fans predict this game might actually be a PS5 exclusive. The esteemed developer will be developing the new open-world Star Wars title, which is now in the early stages of production.

Star Wars Game Announced

Now, we've got new word on the first Star Wars game to be coming from a publisher that isn't Electronic Arts. There was definitely a big step up with Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, but the game still had some issues that displeased fans. And it's clear Star Wars Squadrons was mostly a miss since it got a steep discount around the holidays, even more than you'd expect for the season. We will continue working with them and our relationship has never been stronger.

What About EA's Exclusivity Deal Regarding Star Wars?

Disney announced it's planning a whopping ten Star Wars series over the next few years, along with an equal number of Marvel series. Indeed, Ubisoft Massive, the studio charged with its production, is still recruiting its team. EA stated back in 2013 that the deal would last for 10 years, but there's been no indication if that deal was misstated or if either party (likely Disney) has backed out early. While a third installment of Battlefront might seem like an easy prospect, all the updates for Battlefront II have basically made that unnecessary, or at least uninteresting. But I can't imagine EA is working on anything new that isn't tied to those franchises in some capacity.
